Caring for your product

Maybe. Everyone and their environment is their own personal chemistry experiment.

Jewelry usually stays pretty shiny while being worn. Storing it is where it usually gets tarnished.

The exceptions to this are those that exercise A LOT. The perspiration and lotions can make it dirty too....

Best tips when not wearing it are to keep it away from wet places or even store in airtight containers.

Read the answer to the next question on how to clean jewelry.

I have a few tools that I like!

For silver:

Any kind of silver polish you can find at the hardware store.

Silver dips are great too but please follow the directions and leave your jewelry in for 10-15 seconds. If you leave it too long, it will take the tarnish AND the patina off too. The one I use is called Connoisseurs Silver Dip.

After cleaning, you can use a Sunshine polishing cloth OR 0000 Steel Wool to make it shiny.

For Brass, I really love the "0000 Steel Wool" to clean it. You can find this at the hardware store.

For goldfill, it looks pretty good all the time!

10k, 14k or 18k GOLD:

I am happy to make something in 14k. Please use the contact form at the bottom of the page to request a quote in the gold of your preference.

GOLD FILL:

This is great alternative to 14k. Gold-filled jewelry is made by bonding a thick layer of solid gold to a base metal, typically brass. It's a more durable and cost-effective alternative to solid gold because the gold layer must be at least 5% (1/20th) of the total weight of the piece.

The manufacturers of gold fill call it a life time product. So it looks and acts like gold and won't wear off like plating. That said, I generally don't use it on pieces that require torch work as that can impact the strength of the bond.

BRASS:

Its yellow color makes it a fun choice for the tiniest fraction of gold. It is an alloy of Copper and Zinc and it really likes to react to the world. Thats ok, it is easy to take care off. My favorite way to clean it is with "0000 Steel Wool" available at hardware stores.

Yes, Brass can you turn your skin green. For necklaces and earrings, I make it so they don't touch your skin and they move enough that it won't be a problem. Cuffs are where it gets exciting. So if you want cuffs as big as wonder woman's and you are worried about your skin turning green, you can just seal the inside with clear nail polish.

Hmmmm......

SWIMMING in lakes and rivers is fine. Pools, hot tubs and oceans can interact with metals and may tarnish your jewelry. If you can't avoid these, try and rinse as soon as you are done.

EXERCISING..you know if you are a super sweater! No worries, just rinse off and expect to have to polish it sometimes.

SLEEPING...most wear to jewelry happens while sleeping. If you want your chains to last longer, take them off. Also, I recommend not sleeping in earrings for the longevity of your lobes. The earrings will be fine, your middle aged lobes might be disappointed in you some day.
